Foster Dog Diaries: Scarlett's Story, Week 4

We've had this sweet girl for a full month now and she has made such incredible progress in just four short weeks. Her wounds have completely healed and her coat has even started to grow back. She has been steadily putting on weight and is finally ready for her spay.

She continues to impress us with how wonderful of a dog she is. Her temperament is laid back and easy going, and she loves people and dogs alike. She walks perfectly on a loose leash and is very well behaved in public. At restaurants she'll lay by your feet while you eat and she has never barked at another dog or person since we've had her. In fact, she rarely barks at all. She does however snort like a Frenchie by day and snores in her sleep like a little old man by night.

After her recovery from her spay she'll be ready for her forever home. And with a line-up of pending adopters waiting to take her home, it's pretty safe to say this little missy has a lifetime of love ahead of her! She thanks you for your love and support!

Foster Dog Diaries: Scarlett’s Story

When we saw this girl’s picture in our inbox we knew without a doubt we couldn’t say no. We are part of a foster program that helps rehabilitate dogs that come into the shelter but need an extra bit of love and care before they find their forever family. We want to introduce the newest rebel resident:

This sweet face is Scarlett. She came in nameless but we thought Scarlett perfectly suited her gorgeous red fawn coat and of course her numerous scars.

While the story behind each rescue dog is always a little uncertain, one look at this skinny girl lets you know she has not been properly cared for in quite a while. She was actually an owner turn in, anonymously abandoned in the night drop along with two other dogs. The two other dogs in her home had attacked her and so the owner who had apparently had enough, decided simply to get rid of them all. We think it turned out for the better anyway because aside from the terrible neglect it is rather evident that this beautiful girl had also not been properly nourished in quite some time either.

From the moment we picked her up, that little nub hasn’t stopped wagging.

 Breed: Boxer

Health and Stats: Scarlett is estimated to be about 3 years old. She only weighs about 41 pounds but we are working on that. Beyond her wounds and scars, she is otherwise healthy. She is up to date on all of her shots and will be spayed as soon as she is at a good weight.

Temperament: This girl appears to be the perfect dog, we cannot even imagine why someone would give her up… but that’s completely their loss. She is sweet and socialized with both people and dogs. Although she has been attacked by several dogs, she shows no aggression or fear and gets along well with dogs both large and small. She is very quiet so far, not a barker by any means. She loves to be loved! She will sit with her head in your lap for as long as you let her and will insist on being pet.

Training & Daily Life: She knows basic commands like ‘sit’ and ‘wait’ and walks very well on a leash. She is house and crate trained and rides well in the car too.

Scarlett will be available for adoption within Southern California through Animal Friends of the Valleys. While she’s not currently up for adoption until she is a little healthier and spayed, you can fill out an application to reserve her if you are interested. Please feel free to shoot us an email at woof@crazyrebels.com with any interest or questions you might have about this special girl.

Lyme Disease Awareness Month

This month we are bringing awareness to not only pet cancer but Lyme disease as well. If you have not been affected, either personally or by association, by Lyme disease you might not even know what it is. But for those who have seen its affects, know the life changing havoc Lyme leaves in its wake.

We’ll be sharing info, facts, our personal story, others experiences, and support all month long to help advocate for Lyme awareness. We've also crafted a very special Lyme collar, matching bracelet, and 4 new Ruff Tags charms all about Lyme!!

Lyme disease is essentially an infection caused by something called a spirochete (a big fancy word for a flexible spirally twisted bacterium) that humans and dogs can contract from the bite of an infected deer tick. This terrible disease can affect and attack any organ in the body including the brain, nervous system, muscles and joints, and even the heart. Lyme is initially confusing and scary for several reasons:

-It is not readily diagnosed.
-The symptoms are similar to those of many other diseases.
-The Infectious Diseases Society of America states that there is no such thing as “chronic Lyme disease”, but anyone with this mysterious and debilitating disease will tell you other wise.

What are the symptoms of Lyme? Lyme disease has been called “The Great Imitator” because the symptoms are easily mistake for those of ALS, MS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Autism to name a few.

Symptoms include: Fatigue, weakness, headache, pack pain, joint and muscle pain, stiff/ sore neck, nausea, diarrhea, sore throat, swollen glands, rash, dizziness, confusion, buzzing sensation in nerves, paralysis, trouble with speaking, thinking, talking, walking, and concentration, trouble breathing, mood swings, and crying spells. Lyme is no joke!

How do you get Lyme disease? People and dogs get Lyme disease from the bite of an infected tick. The longer a tick is attached to the body the longer they feed, which increases the risk of them passing the Lyme bacteria into your bloodstream.

What else carries Lyme disease? Ticks, mosquitoes, flies, fleas, and wild animals such as rodents, rabbits, birds, and deer can all carry the spirochete bacteria of Lyme.

Where do ticks live? Ticks live in warm, damp places usually near water grass or brush. This is why it is so important to protect yourself and your pets when hiking, playing, and exploring.

So what do you do? It’s very important to use tick repellent on yourself and your dogs when hiking in tick heavy places. Check yourself and your pets carefully after being out in tick territory. Be sure to check in the nooks and crannys, along the waistband of your pants, and all over on pets paying special attention to their ears, arm pits, and paw pads.

Check here for the correct way to remove a tick.

Now help pass it on and fight the bite! Lyme bites, but it doesn’t have to stop there. Education is key.

Diesel's Favorite Cupcakes

Happy 3rd birthday to our sweet Diesel. This boy is the most loving, gentle soul we have had the pleasure of knowing. We cannot imagine our home without him in it. He brings so much joy to his humans and tender companionship to his two big sisters. We love you so mister D!

Just like his daddy, Diesel's first and second favorite foods have to be bacon and more bacon. For his birthday he insisted we make bacon inspired cupcakes. These chicken, apple, carrot cupcakes for dogs are not only delicious (Diesel's words, not mine) but they're also super easy to make and pretty healthy too (But don't tell Diesel). The only vegetables Diesel likes are the Orbee rubber ones he can chase around the backyard, but these dog cupcakes combine the yummy flavors of chicken and bacon with the health benefits of carrots and apples to make one mighty tasty bite.

Since Diesel is pretty baller, we threw him a baseball themed party complete with organic Bacon Baseball Bite pupcakes. Check out the recipe below and let us know what your pups think!

The Story Behind The Collar

The Rebel Collar was created so that anyone can create their dream collar. From beginning to end the customer works with our rebel artist to design the perfect collar they imagine in their head so that we can bring it to life. This particular collar was crafted in loving memory of a person gone too soon, Ryan David Jackson.

This collar was crafted for a special service dog named Donkey, as a memento to keep his human dad’s memory alive. The design was inspired by one of Ryan’s tattoos so we wanted the style to closely reflect the artwork.

Brie share’s her story and the meaning behind why Donkey and this collar are so special:

“Donkey was something we chose together. He was our puppy. What an honor it is to own such a special collar in his memory. This collar means so much. I could never express the meaning. I can only give a brief history to explain the design.
Ryan David Jackson (initials on collar and also a tattoo Ryan had on his back) was a love that I had and lost. He lost his life on the scene of his car accident, Labor Day 2013. I never got to say "I'm sorry" or "Goodbye." The day he died, a big piece of me died too. At the time of his accident (1 am), I woke up in a panic. I felt it. I knew something was wrong. That afternoon I was given the news of his passing. I will never be able to explain the guilt and regret I feel. Never take your loved ones for granted; sometimes lives are cut short without any warnings.
Crazy Rebels took the time to replicate pieces of Ryan's tattoos and design this beautiful piece of art in his memory. Whenever I think of Ryan, it makes me sad. My heart is broken. When I look at this collar, I want to smile knowing someone took the time and love to design something for me, so special, a piece of Ryan that I can physically see and touch. It makes it that much more special that my dog (our dog) has the honor of wearing it. I can't thank CR enough for the effort that went into this hand carved and hand painted collar, in memory of my lost love.”

Our hearts go out to Brie and Donkey, such a good reminder that life is indeed fragile and should be lived with purpose. It is our intention to put this much meaning and love into each and every collar we craft for your dogs. We hope you can feel the love.
